These are some recent photos of favorite sites in Burnt Corn, Alabama as it exist today and a brief history of each as recollected by Vernon Watson.

BURNT CORN GROCERY

This store is now operated by Joseph Watson, Jr. who is known in Burnt Corn as "Sonny". This store was once owned by Comer Booker who purchased the propery with the original store and house from Eddie and Paddie Mosley. Comer Booker tore down the orginal store and built the store in the photograph above in the early 60's. Then, in the early 1980's he sold the property to Joe Watson who died in 1992. Joe Watson passed it on to his estate after his death and son Joseph (Sonny) Watson now operates it.

SAM LOWERY HOUSE

This house belongs to the JFB Lowery Estate and was the home of Sam and Evelyn Lowery until their deaths. Sam Lowery was a prominent businessman in Burnt Corn. He ran the Burnt Corn General Store and was the Post Master for the Burnt Corn Post Office

BETHANY BAPTIST CHURCH

This is Bapthany Baptist Church, Rev. J.O. Malone, Pastor. Church services are held on the 1st and 2nd Sundays of each month.

THE TOWN OF BURNT CORN
JFB Lowery's Store
BURNT CORN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
The Lowery Store dates back over a 100 years, was own by the JFB Lowery Estate and operated by Sam Lowery until his death. Ray Welch now is the operator this histroic store. This store also was the home of United States Post Office serving the Burnt Corn community until it was shut down several years ago.
BURNT CORN FIRE STATION
This the cross road entrance into the town of Burnt Corn, Alabama

This is the entrance to Burnt Corn from Monroeville or Evergreen. Burnt Corn located on both Monroe and Conecuh county lines. The City of Monroeville is located 12 miles to the west and the city of Evergreen is located 15 miles to the east.

The "old" Burnt Corn Jr. High School

Burnt Corn Junior High School went from the first (1st) to the nineth (9th) grade for "colored children only".

Mr. Earl Lett, Prinicpal. Teachers were: 1st Grade - Mrs. Clausell; 2nd Grade - Mrs. Simmon (formerly Ms Travis); 3rd & 4th Grades - Mrs. Tucker; 4th & 5th grades - Mrs Wright; 6th Grade - Mrs. Daily; 7th & 8th Grades - Mr. Stallworth; 9th Grade, Mr. Lett. The school was closed in the late 60's


Burnt Corn "new" Fire Station

Burnt Corn "old" fire station was located at Comer Booker store now known as "Watson Grocery or Burnt Corn Gro". The fire department then had one old fire truck manned by any volunteer. Today, the new fire station is modernized with newer equipment and organized with volunteers. Bill Rankins is the current fire chief.

MID CENTURY HOUSES BUILT DURING THE LATE 40'S AND EARLY 50'S

JOE & HETTIE WATSON HOUSE

This house was built by Joe and Hettie Watson in the late 40's where they raised ten children. The brought the Comer Booker property and moved in early 80's. This house is now owned by Johnny and Paulette Williams.

JOSEPH WATSON, JR. HOUSE

This house was originally owned by Eddie and Paddie Mosley and was probable built in the '20s or '30s. Comer Booker later acquired this property after Eddie Mosley death. Comer Booker sold this proerty to Joe & Hettie Watson in the early 80's. This house is now a part the Watson's Estate and Joseph Watson, Jr. is now living in this house

TYRONE RANKINS HOUSE

This house originally owned by Sidney and Rosie Lee Cunningham was moved to this location in the early 60's after Sidney Cunningham's death. Rosie Lee Cunningham lived in this house until her death during the 80's. Tyrone Rankins brought the propery after Rosie Lee's death.
